Dental Tourism Risks in Korea
Common Problems and How to Prevent Them

Medically reviewed by Dr. Sunmin Kim, Board-certified Orthodontist · Last updated 2026-10-22

More people are considering dental treatment in Korea, and some come back saying "the result was not what I expected" or "I did not know what to do when something went wrong at home". This article sets out common problems with dental tourism and realistic ways to avoid them. There is no need to be overly anxious: much can be prevented with preparation.

Common problems

  • Miscommunication: wishes and concerns are not conveyed accurately.
  • A result different from what you imagined: color, shape or whiteness was not agreed in enough detail before treatment.
  • Problems after you go home: you are not sure how to get in touch or what happens next.
  • Misunderstood aftercare conditions: scope, period and conditions were assumed from a verbal conversation.
  • Extra costs: additional tests or procedures changed the total from the first estimate.

How to prevent each problem

Preventing miscommunication

Check what language support the clinic offers and how far it goes. Share your wishes and concerns as photos or notes as well as verbally, and ask whether the consultation can be recorded in writing.

Preventing a mismatch in the result

Agree color, shape and number of teeth concretely using photos or a simulation. Results differ from person to person and are limited by the condition of your mouth, so ask what can and cannot be done.

Preventing cost misunderstandings

Check in the itemised estimate what is included and when extra costs can arise, including tests, extra procedures and remakes.

Tip: Most problems come from not sharing enough information before treatment. Confirm your wishes, the cost and the aftercare conditions in writing, not just verbally.

Checklist before you book

  • Have I checked the scope of language support (consultation, treatment, contact afterwards)?
  • Have I shared the result I want with photos or a simulation?
  • Have I checked the itemised estimate and when extra costs can arise?
  • Have I received the aftercare scope, period and conditions in writing, including after returning home?
  • Do I know how to contact the clinic after I go home?
  • Does the treatment schedule fit my stay without strain?

If something does go wrong

  1. Keep a way to get in touch: know the contact or person you can reach after returning home.
  2. Record and share symptoms: describe discomfort or problems with photos, video and notes. Our patients send photos on WhatsApp or LINE.
  3. Re-check the aftercare conditions: scope, cost and how it is handled.
  4. See a local dentist if needed: for sudden pain or emergencies, a dentist at home is also an option.
