Details

If your concern is tooth color, the right order is to try whitening first, which does not shave your teeth. Whitening brightens the color of all your natural teeth, such as stains from coffee, tea or smoking and yellowing with age. At Ceramic Dental Clinic, stain removal, whitening and soothing care to reduce sensitivity are done as 1 set over 2 visits. Resin, crowns and veneers do not change color with whitening, and natural teeth gradually darken again over time. If you have large resin fillings on the front surface or also want to change the shape, whitening is not enough and we consider veneers. Even then, we whiten the neighboring teeth first and match the veneers after the color has settled.

01°

When whitening was enough and when it was not

Even with the same "yellow teeth," the answer differed depending on whether the cause was natural tooth color or resin and shape.

02°

When whitening is enough, when it is not, and when to wait

01When whitening is enough

When all your teeth are evenly yellow, when you have stains from coffee, tea or smoking, when color has changed with age, or when matching the color of neighboring teeth before veneers.

02When whitening is not enough

When you have large resin fillings, crowns or veneers on your front teeth (those parts do not change), a single dark tooth because the nerve has died (in this case we first do internal whitening of the non-vital tooth from inside), very dark gray banded discoloration, or when shape and gaps are also a concern.

03When whitening should wait

When you have untreated cavities, gum inflammation or severe sensitivity. We do not recommend whitening during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

03°

How whitening works

From the examination and color record to soothing care, 1 set is finished in one visit (about 1 hour). We explain what we do at each step and why.

Examination before whitening. We check for cavities, gum inflammation and sensitive teeth, and mark in advance where resin or prostheses will look different in color after whitening. The marked areas in the photo are old resin that has changed color, and its color will stay the same after whitening.

STEP 01

We check cavities, gums and sensitivity and tell you in advance where color will stay

If you have untreated cavities or gum inflammation, whitening materials can irritate them and make sensitivity worse, so we treat them first. We mark resin and prostheses on the front teeth to show you in advance where the color will stay the same after whitening.

Why we do thisMost cases of "only this tooth didn't get brighter" after whitening are resin or prostheses. Knowing this before starting lets us plan together whether to redo the resin after whitening.

STEP 02

We record the starting color with a shade guide and photos

Under the same lighting, we hold a shade guide next to your front teeth and take photos to record the starting color. After whitening, we take photos the same way and compare.

Why we do thisEyes that see your teeth every day do not notice color changes easily. With a record, how much brighter your teeth became and whether more whitening is needed can be decided by comparison, not by feel.

STEP 03

We first clean the surface with scaling and stain removal

Sparkle [term?] scaling and stain removal clear tartar and stains from the tooth surface. If you only had surface stains, your teeth can become noticeably brighter at this step alone.

Why we do thisIf tartar and stains cover the teeth, the whitening material cannot reach the teeth evenly, and the teeth may brighten unevenly.

In-office whitening. After protecting the gums, an MFDS-approved whitening material (Luminous) is applied and left to work for a set time.

STEP 04

We protect the gums and let the whitening material work

After applying a protective material to the gums, we apply an MFDS-approved whitening material (Luminous) to the teeth and leave it to work for a set time. 2-step spa whitening uses two whitening agents together: Sparkle from the previous step and Luminous in this step. Sparkle is good at preparing teeth before whitening, and Luminous is good at calming sensitivity after whitening, so using both together works well.

Why we do thisBecause whitening material breaks down pigments inside the teeth, it can turn the gums white or make them sting if it touches them. We block the gums first so the material touches only the teeth.

1 set is finished using an anti-sensitivity whitening agent and a soothing care whitening agent. The right photo shows the result after 2 cycles, with 1 more set done 4 months later.

STEP 05

We finish 1 set in one visit with anti-sensitivity and soothing care whitening agents

An anti-sensitivity whitening agent and a soothing care whitening agent are each used in one cycle. 1 set is finished in one visit, taking about 1 hour in total. At the end, we compare with the starting color and record it, and decide whether more whitening is needed based on this comparison.

Why we do thisStrong whitening all at once can make sensitivity worse. Using an anti-sensitivity whitening agent and a soothing care whitening agent separately lets us raise the brightness while managing sensitivity.

* Clinical photos were published with the patients' consent. Side effects such as temporary pain or discomfort may occur depending on the person.

For about two days right after whitening, it is best to avoid strongly colored foods such as coffee, tea, curry and red wine, and smoking. After that, you can eat as usual, but it is best to cut down on foods that stain easily. Sensitivity usually settles within a few days.

05°

If you get veneers or resin after whitening

Right after whitening, the tooth color has not yet settled, and whitening ingredients left on the tooth surface temporarily weaken bonding. So we match the color of veneers or resin only after some time has passed and the color has settled. At Ceramic Dental Clinic, we usually wait about 1 week before matching.

If you have old resin fillings on your front teeth, they are often redone to match the brighter tooth color after whitening. If you are getting veneers on only some teeth, whitening the other teeth first lets us match the veneers to a brighter shade.

06°

Self-check

If any of these apply, we check at the consultation whether whitening alone is enough or whether another treatment should come first.

07°

Side effects and limits

Please read

· Your teeth may feel temporarily sensitive during or right after whitening. This usually settles within a few days.

· If whitening material touches the gums, they may temporarily turn white or sting.

· Teeth gradually return toward their original color after whitening. Maintaining the results requires good habits and ongoing care.

· The color of resin, crowns and veneers does not change with whitening.

· How much teeth brighten differs from person to person, and gray banded discoloration does not brighten well.

FAQ

FAQ

Does teeth whitening damage my teeth?
When materials approved by Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) are used with the set method and time, teeth whitening does not shave or weaken the tooth structure. However, your teeth may feel temporarily sensitive, so we also provide soothing care.
How long do teeth whitening results last?
How long whitening lasts depends on habits such as coffee, tea and smoking, so we cannot promise a period, and the color slowly returns over time. If your color is recorded, you can compare and decide whether more whitening is needed when your teeth darken again.
Read more about this question →
How many whitening sessions do I need?
In-office whitening at Ceramic Dental Clinic is done as 1 set over 2 visits. Whether more whitening is needed is decided by comparing the color recorded at the start with the color after 1 set.
What happens after whitening if I have resin fillings on my front teeth?
Resin does not change color with whitening, so after whitening it may look darker than the surrounding teeth. Once the color has settled after whitening, one option is to redo the resin to match the brighter tooth color.
I'm worried about sensitivity after teeth whitening.
Sensitivity after teeth whitening is usually temporary and settles within a few days. If you already have sensitive teeth, we check this first at the examination and manage sensitivity with soothing care and by splitting whitening into two sessions.
If whitening doesn't work, do I need veneers?
If whitening does not reach the shade you want, you have large resin fillings, or you also want to change the shape, we consider veneers. If the color is only slightly short of what you want, more whitening or replacing the resin may be enough, so we compare the options for you.
Are there foods I should avoid after teeth whitening?
Right after whitening, teeth absorb pigments easily, so it is best to avoid strongly colored foods such as coffee, tea, curry and red wine, and smoking, for a short while. This is usually about two days, and after that you can eat as usual. However, it is best to brush your teeth right after eating strongly colored foods.
If I come from abroad on a short schedule, can I finish teeth whitening?
Yes. 1Day whitening, finished in one day, takes about 1 hour, so you can get it even on a short schedule.

ABROAD

Visiting from abroad

Questions from patients who travel to Seoul for treatment.

How much does whitening cost?
1Day whitening (light-activated, finished in one day) is KRW 385,000. Combo whitening (2 light-activated sessions plus home whitening) is KRW 550,000. Both include VAT. International and Korean patients pay the same fees. See our fee schedule.
Can I have whitening on a short trip?
Yes. 1Day whitening is finished in one day, so it suits short stays. One in-office session takes about 20 to 30 minutes, but 1 to 3 sessions may be needed depending on the discoloration. We first do a check-up and scaling to prepare the tooth surface, so we plan your schedule at the consultation.
Can I have my consultation in English?
Yes. The doctor in charge of your treatment consults with you directly in English. Before you travel, you can send photos of your teeth on WhatsApp or by email. An accurate diagnosis is made after we examine you in person.
What about care after I go home?
Combo whitening includes home whitening with custom trays, so you can continue at home. To keep teeth white longer, we suggest whitening about every 6 months. Send us a photo on WhatsApp if anything worries you.

Results, the number of visits and schedules vary from person to person. More questions: Visiting from abroad.
